Restaurants, hair salons, auto shops, contractors, clinics…
Your customers ask Google and AI. Does your name come up?
On the Google map, only 3 businesses show up at first. When people ask ChatGPT or Gemini for advice, they cite 2 or 3 names. Everyone else is invisible.
If you check at least one box, customers in your area are going to a competitor without even seeing you.
When people search for your trade and your city on Google, you don't show up on the map.
The competitor across the street has twice as many reviews as you.
Your Google Business Profile hasn't been updated in a long time (photos, hours…).
You get a negative review and don't know how to respond.
Customers tell you they found a competitor “by asking ChatGPT”.
Good news: all of this can be fixed. Here's how.
How Google chooses
For the map, Google looks at 3 things.
1
Distance
Google first shows businesses close to the person searching. That's something you can't change.
2
Relevance
Does your profile match what's being searched? Category, services, description, your website's content.
3
Prominence
Your reviews (number, rating, regularity), mentions of your business elsewhere online, your website.
Distance is out of your hands. Relevance and prominence aren't: that's what the guide below is all about.
Search: hair salon near me
Example
1Elegance Salon4.8 (212)
2The Hair Studio4.7 (158)
3Cut & Style4.6 (97)
And you? If you're not in these 3, most customers don't see you.
The guide
10 levers to get ahead of your competitors.
What the best-ranked businesses actually do. Apply them in order, at your own pace.
Your Google Business Profile
1. The right primary category
It's the setting that weighs the most on the map, and the one most often chosen poorly. “Restaurant” is too vague if you're a pizzeria.
Choose the most specific category that describes your main business.
Add 2 to 4 secondary categories for your other services, no more.
2. Your real name, no added keywords
Adding “cheap hair salon Austin” to your name can give you a small boost… and then get your profile suspended if a competitor reports you.
Use exactly the name of your business, as it appears on your storefront.
Watch out: A suspended profile disappears from the map, sometimes for weeks.
3. Opening hours that are always right
A customer who finds the door closed often leaves a negative review. And Google highlights businesses that are open at the time of the search.
Enter your holiday hours ahead of time.
Add special hours (delivery, appointments…).
4. Recent photos, regularly
A profile that gets new photos shows a business that's alive. And customers often choose based on photos.
Storefront (to be recognized on the street), interior, team, products or past work.
Add a few photos every month rather than 30 at once.
5. Updates on your profile
Google posts (current offer, something new, an event) appear on your profile and show you're active.
One post every two weeks is enough: a photo, two sentences, a link.
Your reviews
6. Ask for reviews at the right moment
The number, the rating and above all the regularity of reviews matter. Most happy customers don't think to leave one: you have to ask.
Ask right after a positive moment (the customer thanks you, leaves happy).
Give a direct link or a QR code: every click you remove counts.
Watch out: Offering a discount in exchange for a review, or only asking happy customers, is against Google's rules.
7. Reply to every review
Your replies are read by future customers as much as the reviews themselves. A calm reply to a negative review is more reassuring than a perfect rating.
Reply within 48 hours, thanking the customer and mentioning what they enjoyed.
For a negative review: acknowledge, briefly explain, offer to talk privately.
Your website and the rest of the web
8. One page per service on your website
“Men's haircut”, “color”, “beard trim”: one clear page per service helps Google show you for each of these searches.
Put your city and neighborhood in the titles of these pages.
Show your address, phone and hours at the bottom of every page, identical to your Google profile.
9. The same information everywhere
Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, industry directories, social media: if your address or phone number differs from one site to another, Google and AI start to doubt.
List the sites where you appear and make your name, address and phone number consistent.
10. Get mentioned where AI reads
When someone asks an AI for “the best florist in Austin”, it relies on reviews, local press, guides and “best of” lists.
Aim for an article in a local newspaper or a local blog.
Get listed in the recognized guides and “best of” lists for your city and your trade.

Your questions
The questions we get asked
I'm not comfortable with computers. Is it complicated?
No. Everything is explained simply, step by step, and there's nothing to install. The test above takes ten seconds: your trade, your city, that's it.
I don't have a website. Does it still work?
Yes. The AI test works without a website, and your Google profile and reviews matter a lot for a local business. A website is still a real plus to get recommended.
Do you buy fake reviews?
Never. It's against the rules and dangerous for your profile. We only help you ask your real customers for a review, at the right moment.
I got an unfair review. Can you remove it?
Nobody can remove a review in Google's place. But a calm, professional reply reassures the people who read it. If the review breaks Google's rules, you can report it from your profile.
How much does it cost?
