Free GEO audit: can ChatGPT cite your website?
Run a free GEO audit of your site: the 6 checks that decide whether ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity can read your pages, understand them and cite you.

In short
A GEO audit checks whether assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity can read your site, understand what you do and use it as a source. You can do it for free in 6 checks: AI crawler access, direct answers on your pages, a clear identity, structured data, presence elsewhere on the web, then a test with your customers' real questions.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is SEO for the assistants that answer instead of showing a list of links. A GEO audit doesn't replace an SEO audit: it adds one simple question. If a customer asks ChatGPT "who's the best plumber near me?", does your website stand a chance of being read and cited?
What is a GEO audit?
It's a check of your website from the point of view of AI assistants. It answers three questions: can AI crawlers get into your site? Do your pages clearly say what you do, for whom and where? Does the rest of the web talk about you? A classic SEO audit mostly looks at your ranking on Google; a GEO audit looks at whether you can become a source cited in an answer.
What are the 6 checks?
Here's what matters, and how to check each point without paying anything:
| Check | What you look at | Free tool |
|---|---|---|
| 1. AI crawler access | Your robots.txt lets search crawlers in (OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) and Googlebot | AI crawler checker |
| 2. Direct answers | Your key pages answer the customer's question in their first lines | Reading your pages, with the method from the ChatGPT guide |
| 3. Clear identity | Name, trade, city, phone, opening hours: easy to find and identical everywhere (site, Google profile, directories) | Your Google Business Profile and a search for your name |
| 4. Structured data | An Organization or LocalBusiness block, and FAQ markup on pages that answer questions | Structured data generator |
| 5. Presence elsewhere | Other websites mention you: trade directories, articles, comparisons | A search for your name on Google and on Bing |
| 6. Real test | What assistants answer to your customers' real questions | ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, by hand, in a private window |
How do you check AI crawler access?
It's the quickest check, and the most serious one when it fails: a crawler that can't get in can't cite anything. Some hosts and firewalls offer a "block AI" option that also blocks search crawlers. The AI crawler checker reads your robots.txt and tells you, crawler by crawler, which ones are allowed. How do you know if your pages answer directly enough?
Open your most important page and read only the first two lines. Would a stranger know what you do, for whom and where? An assistant readily quotes a sentence that answers plainly, for example "We deliver flowers across Austin, same day for any order placed before 2 pm". Question-style subheadings ("How much does… cost?", "Do you work in…?") with the answer right below also help Google reuse your page.
In what order should you fix things?
Start with what blocks everything, then with what costs least:
- Let AI search crawlers in through your robots.txt.
- Make your identity identical everywhere: website, Google profile, directories.
- Rewrite the opening of your key pages so they answer the customer's question right away.
- Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data, and FAQ markup.
- List your business in your trade and city directories.
- Ask the assistants the same questions a month later, and compare.
An llms.txt file can help on top, but it isn't an official standard and its effect isn't proven: only do it once the rest is in place.
What a GEO audit can't promise
Nobody controls the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. They change from one question to the next, and from one day to the next. A GEO audit tells you what keeps you from being cited and what helps; it doesn't guarantee a spot. Be wary of any offer that promises to get you "cited within 48 hours".
